Battle for Mariupol Ends, Troops Evacuated

The war in Ukraine continues but the battle in Mariupol has neared it’s end. According to a statement by the country’s military, Ukrainian forces completed their ‘combat mission’ in Mariupol bringing an end to a nearly months long battle. Commanders of units stationed at the Azovstal Steel Plant were ordered to ‘save the lives of their personnel’ and hundreds of people were evacuated from the plant on Monday. According to Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar, 53 people that were seriously injured were evacuated from the plant to a medical facility for care and 211 people were taken to Olenivka through the humanitarian corridor. Also according to Malyar, the defense of Mariupol meant Russian forces couldn’t transfer 20,000 personnel to other regions in Ukraine and failed to capture Zaporizhzhia.
