Emmanuel Macron Wins Re-Election as President of France

French President Emmanuel Macron has won reelection. Macron took 58.5% of the vote yesterday during a runoff vote which makes him the first French leader to be reelected in 20 years. He and his opponent Marine Le Pen advanced to the runoff after finishing in first and second place among 12 candidates who ran in the first round on April 10th. The voter abstention rate for the election was 28% according to the French Interior Ministry which is the highest in more than 50 years. In his victory speech, Macron vowed to be the ‘president for each and every one of you’, thanked his supporters and acknowledged that many voted for him simply to block the extreme right.
