President Biden to Announce Emergency Waiver on E15 Gasoline

Today, President Biden will announce that the Environmental Protection Agency will issue an emergency waiver permitting year-round sales of E15 gasoline. E15 gasoline contains about 15% ethanol and is usually prohibited from June to mid-September because of air quality concerns. In 2019, former President Trump issued an order that allowed permanent year-round sales of the fuel but that was overturned last year by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. According to an official, the President’s announcement is “distinct from his predecessor’s effort to expand ethanol sales in that it’s based on the current circumstance, which is a fuel supply emergency.” The White House estimates that with E15 sales, consumers could save 10 cents per gallon on average.
