Bird Flu Cases Have Risen in Several States
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it's the worst bird flu outbreak since 2015.
Federal health officials are monitoring a type of bird flu that’s affecting poultry farms in the U.S. In recent weeks, the highly lethal type of avian influenza has been found along the east coast and the midwest. Fortunately health officials say there are no signs the strain poses a danger to humans, but experts are on the lookout for potential mutations of the virus that could become a bigger threat. To do so, the CDC is closely watching people who’ve been exposed to domestic and wild species infected with H5N1. Since February, the virus has been detected in flocks in at least 17 states. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it’s the worst bird flu outbreak since 2015, when nearly 50 million birds died.
