Questioning Begins in Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Hearing
President Biden’s pick for Supreme Court Justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson is in the midst of questioning from lawmakers during the second day of her confirmation hearings. The hearings kicked off yesterday with opening statements from senators on the panel and the nominee. Today makes the first of two days of questioning. Each senator will be given the chance to ask questions to Brown for 30 minutes each. There are 11 Democrats and 11 Republicans on the panel and the questioning is expected to last into the evening. Tomorrow, each lawmaker will be given 20 minutes for a second round of questioning. So far, Democrats have used the hearings to praise Brown as an exceptionally qualified, trail-blazing nominee whose depth and breadth of experience, including as a federal public defender would add a valuable and unique perspective to the bench. Republicans on the other hand, have focused on some of her past defense work as well as by broadly attempting to connect her to criminal justice policies that they say have fueled a rise in crime.
