Florida Senate Votes 23-15 in Favor of 15 Week Abortion Ban

Yesterday, the Florida senate passed a bill to ban abortions in the state after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Senators voted 23 to 15 in favor of the legislation. Florida joins a growing list of states including West Virginia, Arizona and others to advance a 15-week abortion ban. Under Florida’s legislation, the only exceptions will involve ‘serious risk’ to the pregnant person to save their life and fatal fetal abnormality but there will be no exceptions for rape or incest. Currently, Florida law bans abortions in the third trimester. Governor Ron DeSantis has a seven-day deadline after the bill is presented to him to either sign or veto it. If signed into law it will go into effect on July 1st.
