Research Study Provides Information On Newest Covid-19 Variant BA.2
New details have emerged about the BA.2 variant of the Coronavirus. Recent lab studies show that BA.2, a sub-variant of Omicron isn’t spreading faster than the Omicron and may also cause more severe disease and appears capable of thwarting some of the key weapons we have against Covid-19. Lab experiments in Japan show that the BA.2 may have features that make it as capable of causing severe illness as older variants of the Coronavirus including the Delta variant. Like Omicron, it appears to largely escape the immunity created by vaccines but booster shots restore protection and make illness after infection about 74% less likely. BA.2 is also resistant to treatments including the monoclonal treatment currently being used against the Omicron variant.
