Houses Passes Postal Service Reform Act, Moves to Senate
Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted to pass a bipartisan bill to overhaul the U.S. Postal Service’s finances and allow the agency to modernize it’s service. The Postal Service Reform Act was passed 342 to 92 and will require retired postal employees to enroll in Medicare when eligible, while dropping a pervious mandate that forced the agency to cover its health care costs years in advance. Those two measures will save the USPS nearly $50 billion over the next decade according to the House oversight committee. The bill now heads to the Senate where it will need to be passed before moving onto President Biden’s desk. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has vowed to take up the legislation before the end of next week.
