Supreme Court Allows Congressional Map Drawn by Alabama Republicans to Stay in Place
Yesterday, in a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court allowed a congressional map drawn by Alabama Republicans to stay in place. This comes after a lower court ruled that the map likely violates the Voting Rights Act by diluting the political power of black voters. The lower court ordered a new map to be drawn which could have led to Democrats gaining another seat in the House of Representative4s this Fall. Chief Justice John Roberts joined the liberal judges in dissent. The justices also added that they are open to hearing arguments over the map. The order means the map will be used for the state’s upcoming primary election and likely be in place for the entire election cycle.
