Indoor Mask Mandate Begins In New York
New York governor Kathy Hochul announced a new temporary indoor mask mandate for the state on Friday. The rule which began today and lasts until at least January 15th requires New Yorkers to wear a mask in all indoor public spaces unless businesses implement a vaccine requirement. During the announcement, Hochul said she’s trying to get ahead of an upcoming ‘winter surge’ for three main reasons: increased cases, reduced hospital capacity and insufficient vaccination rates in certain areas of the state. Anyone who violates the mandate could face a fine up to $1,000 and is subject to civil and criminal penalties.
