Carolina Kindness: These Stories Will Carry You Through the Week!

WFXB and Maguire Law Firm team up each Wednesday for Carolina Kindness. Your story may be next!

Each Wednesday we pause to bring you acts of kindness from around the world to our own backyards. We have teamed up Maguire Law Firm to bring you Carolina Kindness.

A woman uses her time and talents to go beyond for a child.  Martha is a physical therapist that works with kids with disabilities.  One particular student stood out for her personality. The student was non-verbal but likes to giggle and loves butterflies.  For her graduation present, Martha who turns out to also be an artist, transformed her bedroom by painting the walls with colorful butterflies.  As a result the girl’s parent reports she has been making more vocalizations.  This inspired Martha to do this for other students.

If you’re a parent and your kid has ever had to sit the bench you’ll relate.  This mom writes, “My daughter had just finished up her junior year of basketball.  Her number of varsity minutes played all year?  Very few.  Her number of points scored? Zero. And I’ve never been more proud.” But she says she didn’t always feel this way. In fact she writes that she struggled all season with her kid sitting the bench. She wasn’t mad at the coach or another player.  As mom of three, she just didn’t know how to be the parent of a kid who didn’t play. What really bothered her was that it didn’t seem to phase her daughter. So one day she couldn’t hold it any longer and turned to her daughter and asked, “Does it not bother you that you aren’t getting to play?  Her response, “I mean, yeah. I’d love to play more, but mom, I know what my role is on the team and I’m okay with that.  I’m having fun.”  From that point on, she watched with a new perspective and saw that she was always cheering, encouraging, engaged, fulfilling her role.

This story is an example of the commitment to continue serving even after serving in the military.  Our friend Jason Walter with Neighbor to Neighbor shared this with us.  He has so many stories of kindness as he’s been recording them for years.  He shared this act of kindness about a retired Air Force Colonel who raised thousands of dollars for those in need by making walking sticks. John Hobson would whittle these sticks and sell them for about $3 a stick or for a donation to the local food pantry.  It takes him about a day to make one.  He raised more than $16,000 to feed those in need.  His message is to never stop helping others.
