HCS Teacher’s Certificate Suspended After Fatal Crash

An update on the Horry County Schools math teacher that was charged with a DUI in connection to a deadly crash in Carolina Forest last week… The South Carolina State Board of Education has suspended the educator certificate for Michael Oerther. The state said there’s reason to believe ‘Mr. Oerther may post a threat to the health, safety and welfare of students and emergency action is required.’ Oerther was charged with felony DUI resulting in death after a crash on October 25th that killed 27 year old Leza Watts. Oerther was previously arrested for three other DUIs; one in 2005, another in 2009 and again in 2011. He also previously faced other charges including driving under suspension, driving without a license and use of a vehicle without permission.
