Studies Show Pfizer Vaccine Effectiveness Wanes Over Time

Two studies published yesterday have confirmed that the immune protection offered by two doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine drops after two months but protection against severe disease, hospitalization and death remains strong. The studies from Israel and Qatar were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and support arguments that even fully vaccinated people need to take precautions against the virus. The study from Israel shows levels wane after two doses of the vaccine “especially among men, among persons 65 years of age or older, and among persons with immuno-suppression.” The Qatar study found that “protection against infection builds rapidly after the first dose, peaks in the first month after the second dose, and then gradually wanes in subsequent months.”

Also in Coronavirus news, currently in the US the number of Americans getting booster shots is surpassing those who are initiating vaccination and according to data from Johns Hopkins University and the US Department of Health and Human Services, Covid-19 cases and the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals have both declined by more than 10% from last week. According to the CDC, just over 56% of the total US population is fully vaccinated.
