NWSL Coach Fired, Commissioner Resigns Amid Investigation

The National Women’s Soccer League is in the middle of a scandal. Over the weekend, the commissioner of the NWSL, Lisa Baird resigned and the league called off all of it’s matches after a report by The Athletic detailing allegations of sexual coercion and misconduct against Paul Riley who coached three NWSL franchises over eight seasons. Riley was fired by the North Carolina Courage last Thursday after an investigative report cited players on the record alleging that for years, he used his influence and power to sexually harass players and in one incident coerce a player into having sex with him. U.S. Soccer said Friday that it will hire someone to investigate the behavior that was reported. FIFA is also launching an investigation as well.

Following commissioner Baird’s resignation the league released a short statement accepting her resignation. Following game cancellations the league said “we refuse to let that joy be taken from us. We also recognize, however, that mental health struggles are real” and added that the weekend would be used for players to take care of themselves. Two-time World Cup Champion Christie Pearch Rampone who was scheduled to be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame this past Saturday also chose to postpone her induction until next year. The league’s next scheduled games begin tomorrow when the N.C. Courage plays at home.
