Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp Experience Outage

Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp experienced an outage yesterday which lasted nearly 6 hours. The outage tracking site Down Detector logged tens of thousands of reports for each of the social media platforms. Facebook’s site wouldn’t load at all and Instagram and Whatsapp were accessible but couldn’t load new content or send messages.

The outage comes a day after a ’60 minute’ special aired in which Facebook Whistleblower Frances Haugen claimed the company is aware of how it’s platforms are used to spread hate, violence and misinformation and that Facebook has tired to hide the evidence. The interview followed weeks of criticism on the social media site and Haugen released thousands of pages of internal documents to regulators and the Wall Street Journal. She is testifying before the Senate subcommiteee on consumer protection, product safety and data security today.
