Pfizer to Apply for Emergency Use Approval for Children Ages 5-11

Pfizer/BioNTech is expected to ask for authorization of their Covid-19 vaccine for children. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said the agency will review data on vaccines for 5 to 11 year olds with urgency and make the call.
Walensky said “we are all enthusiastically awaiting data.” And added “as soon as they get submitted to the FDA, I know the FDA is urgently planning to review these data, it will go from the FDA to the CDC, and we will review it with similar urgency.”

She hopes to pass the authorization in a few weeks. Waslensky said boosters for people who’ve gotten the Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines will also be addressed with the same urgency as Pfizer’s vaccine. The third dose of the Pfizer vaccine is currently available for people who’ve received their second dose more than 6 months ago and fit into a certain criteria.
