Immigration Crisis at the Border Continues

The border crisis continues at the Del Rio International Bridge in Texas where 8.600 migrants from Haiti remain with hopes of getting processed by U.S. border patrol. Yesterday Texas Governor Greg Abbott said officials are using ‘unprecedented’ methods to deter migrants from crossing into the state including parking Texas National Guard and Texas Department of Public Safety vehicles for miles along the border to create a ‘steel barrier’. According to U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz, the surge of migrants at the border is a result of messages by word of mouth or social media that the border at the Del Rio was open.

Abbott blamed President Biden’s administration for the current situation at the border saying that the federal government is not doing enough to secure the country’s southern border, saying it has led to thousands of migrants camped under the bridge waiting to get processed by authorities. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the administration hopes to clear the migrant camp within the next nine or 10 days. During a Senate panel hearing yesterday, Mayorkas said “we expect to see dramatic results in the next 48 to 96 hours, and we’ll have a far better sense in the next two days.”
