Crisis at Border Worsens as Thousands Try to Enter the United States

Immigrants remain at the Del Rio International Bridge in Texas. About 10,000 people, many of them from Haiti are crowding the area after the Department of Homeland Security moved 3,000 people to other processing facilities yesterday. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and his agency are working to facilitate one to three deportation flights to Haiti and other locations daily.

According to Mayorkas, refugees who arrived in the United States from Haiti before July 29th are eligible for temporary protected status. Many Haitians at the border are believed to have been living in South America after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti but the toll the pandemic took on the region fueled their migration to the United States border. The White House is seeking more information on the ‘horrific’ viral videos that appear to show border agents on horseback confronting Haitian refugees at the border according to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.
