Former South Carolina Attorney Alex Murdaugh Released On Bond

Former South Carolina Attorney Alex Murdaugh appeared in court yesterday on fraud charges. Murdaugh was arrested yesterday after turning himself in in connection to an insurance fraud scheme. In the scheme, he had asked one of his former client’s 61 year old Curtis Smith to shoot him so his son could receive a $10 million life insurance policy. Hampton County Magistrate Judge Tonja Alexander set a $20,000 personal recognizance bond for Murdaugh and he has already been released.

According to his attorney, Murdaugh will be returning to an out-of-state rehab center where he’s being treated for an opioid addiction. On Wednesday, Smith was charged with assisted suicide, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, pointing and presenting a firearm, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. Yesterday, judge Alexander set bond for him at $55,000.
