Five Rockets Fired at Kabul Airport Amid Evacuations

Ahead of tomorrow’s withdrawal deadline, the Biden administration is working hard to help with evacuation of the remaining Americans and Afghans who helped the U.S. government during the war. The U.S. state department issued a joint statement with governments from numerous countries across the globe yesterday saying that they will hold the Taliban to their promises that they will allow people to leave the country after tomorrow saying “we’re committed to ensuring that our citizens, nationals and residents, employees, Afghans who have worked with us and those who are at risk can continue to travel freely to destinations outside Afghanistan”. According to the White House about 1,200 people have been evacuated in the last 24 hours bringing the total of evacuees to 116,700 since August 14th.

According to U.S. officials, this morning, as many as five rockets were fired at the Kabul airport but the C-Ram defense system installed at the airport engaged with the rockets and there were no casualties reported. It is suspected that those rockets were launched by ISIS-K but it’s too early to know for sure. The rocket strikes come a few days after two suicide bombings at the airport that killed more than 170 people including 13 American service members and injured 200 people.
