Seven U.S. Capitol Police Officers File Lawsuit Against Former President Donald Trump
Seven U.S. Capitol Police Officers are suing former President Donald Trump, ‘Stop the Steal’ organizers and members of far-right extremist groups over the Capitol Riots. According to the 71 page lawsuit, the plaintiffs and their fellow law enforcement officers ‘risked their lives to defend the Capitol from a violent, mass attack which was provoked, aided and joined by defendants in an unlawful effort to use force, intimidation and threats to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 Presidential election.’ The plaintiffs were assaulted, spat on, tear-gassed, bear-sprayed, were subject to racial slurs and were in fear for their lives during the insurrection.
The newest lawsuit is one of many in a string of legal actions against former President Trump and plaintiffs are aiming to hold him liable for the attack on the U.S. Capitol building during which 140 officers were injured. Currently there are more than 600 people facing criminal charges for their alleged roles in the riots. A spokesperson for Trump has yet to comment on the lawsuit and he previously denied any responsibility for the attack.
