Two Explosions Reported Near Airport in Kabul

This morning, there were two explosions at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan. It was reported that at least 3 U.S. troops were wounded in the first, a suicide bombing outside of the Abbey Gate. It is unclear how many other people were injured or killed in the attack but Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said “the explosion was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of U.S. and civilian casualties.” The bombing comes hours after the state department warned Americans at a number of gates at the Hamid Karzai International Airport to ‘leave immediately’ due to increasing terroristic threats.

Kirby also confirmed that there was at least one other explosion near the airport at or near the Baron hotel. An alert read: “we are advising U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates at this time unless you receive individual instructions from a U.S. government representative to do so.” At the time of the alert, the U.S. believed ISIS-K, an enemy of the Taliban wanted to create mayhem at the airport and had suggested it was capable and planning to carry out multiple attacks in the area.
