Two Arrested for Murder of Missing Man in Georgetown County

Two people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a missing man from Georgetown County. According to the Georgetown County Sheriff, the missing man, Harry Barkley, was first reported missing back in April 2020 and investigators found his vehicle in the Sampit River at Chavis River in September 2020. Human remains that were believed to be Barkley were found in May of this year in Williamsburg County. Yesterday, the Sheriff said the DNA evidence confirmed the body was Barkley. Officials then arrested 21 year old Eric Hempel of Georgetown whom they charged with murder. Hempel was already in custody in Tennessee after a high speed chase and is being extradited back to South Carolina. 21 year old Shelby Ashby of Georgetown as well, was also arrested. She’s facing accessory to murder charges and is behind bars at the Georgetown County Detention Center.
