Vice President Kamala Harris Visits Singapore, Vietnam
Vice President Kamala Harris is visiting Singapore and Vietnam this week. With the trip, she became the highest-ranking Biden administration member to visit Asia so far. In a statement, her office said ‘her trip builds on the Biden-Harris Administration’s message to the world: America is back.” The statement also said ‘the Vice President will emphasize the importance of comprehensive engagement and strategic partnerships.’ During the meetings with government officials, the private sector and civil society leaders, Harris will share the Biden Administrations vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, raise trade and security issues, including in the South China Sea and promote economic cooperation.
Harris is also expected to ‘engage the leaders of both governments on issues of mutual interest.’ She is the first Vice President to ever visit Vietnam, Harris visited Mexico and Guatemala in June as part of the Administration’s efforts to stem migration from the northern triangle. President Biden has yet to travel to the region since taking office but the White House remains firm on their importance of U.S. relationships in the region.
