1,297 Dead and 5,700 Injured After 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake, Several Aftershocks Hit Haiti

Officials say the quake destroyed 13,694 homes and damaged another 13,785 as well as pushed hospitals to the brink and blocked roads that carry vital supplies. Following the initial quake a 5.2 magnitude aftershock hit later Saturday and several more aftershocks continued which included one with a 5.1 magnitude.

The quake struck around 8:30 a.m. about 6.2 miles deep with it’s epicenter about 7.5 miles northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud. The location was about 60 miles west of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that happened in 2010 and killed an estimated 220,000 to 300,000 people. Haiti is expected to experience high winds and heavy rains from Tropical Storm Grace today into tomorrow. That rain could lead to flooding and mudslides and further complicate recovery efforts.
