FDA Authorizes Additional Covid-19 Vaccine Dose For Immunocompromised People

Yesterday the FDA authorized an additional Covid-19 vaccine dose for certain immunocompromised people. The FDA amended the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to allow for an additional dose for people with compromised immune systems. According the the agency, that group includes ‘specifically solid organ transplant recipients or those who are diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise.”

Currently the two dose Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna and the single dose Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 vaccines are authorized for emergency use in the United States. Full approval is pending for the Pfizer vaccine. The CDC’s advisory committee is scheduled to meet today to discuss booster doses of the vaccine and additional doses for immunocompromised people. The committee is scheduled to vote today on whether to recommend additional doses of the vaccine for immunocompromised people.
