Census Survey Shows Population Growth Slowed in the U.S. from 2010 to 2020

Yesterday the Census Bureau released the data used to draw congressional and state legislative district lines. The data showed that population growth in the U.S. over the past decade has slowed and 52% of counties have smaller populations than they did in 2010. Almost all of the population growth however was in cities. Marc Perry the Senior Demographer of the U.S, Census Bureau population division said “metro areas are even more prominent this decade as the locations of population growth amidst otherwise widespread population decline.”

With the release of the data, states will now need to complete their new maps for congressional and house seats in the upcoming weeks and months.  Texas will gain two house seats, while Florida, North Carolina, Colorado, Oregon and Montana will add one. Seven states will lose a seat which include Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, New York, Illinois and West Virginia.
