Cuomo Resigns, New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul Will be Replacing Him
Yesterday afternoon, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation. This comes after the New York Attorney General Letitia James’ investigation into several sexual harassment allegations made against him. James found that Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women, engaged in ‘unwelcome and non consensual touching’, and created a ‘hostile’ work environment for women. Cuomo has continued to deny all of the allegations.
New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul will be replacing Cuomo on August 24th, becoming the first female governor of the state. In a statement on twitter Hochul said “I agree with Governor Cuomo’s decision to step down. It is the right thing to do and in the best interest of New Yorkers.” Cuomo praised Hochul yesterday saying she is “smart and competent” and adding that the transition “must be seamless.” Hochul has served as Cuomo’s Lieutenant for nearly the last seven years. New York Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins will take on the active duties of Lieutenant Governor until Hochul names a replacement.
