Florida State University Football Coach Bobby Bowden Dies at Age 91
Legendary Florida State University football coach Bobby Bowden passed away over the weekend at the age of 91. According to a statement from his daughter, Bowden ‘passed peacefully’ at his home. In July he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In a statement last month, Bowden said “I’ve always tried to serve God’s purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come, my wife Ann and our family have been life’s greatest blessing. I am at peace.”
FSU became one of the most dominant teams of the 90’s under Bowden winning nine straight conference titles, the National Championship in 1993 and 1999 and in 1999 the team had a perfect 12-0 season. From 1987 to 2000 he led FSU to 14 straight 10-season wins and numerous bowl games. Bowden retired from coaching in 2009 after 44 seasons which included 6 at West Virginia University and 34 at Florida State University, he is the second winningest coach in NCAA history with 357 wins behind Penn State’s late Joe Paterno.
