Biden Signs Executive Order Promoting Electric Vehicles

President Biden unveiled another component of his administration’s plan to fight the climate crisis yesterday. He announced his target that half of the vehicles sold in the county by 2030 will be battery electric, fuel-cell electric or plug-in hybrid. The President was joined by representatives from Ford, GM, Stellantis and members of the United Auto Workers Union as he signed the executive orders. According to a statement from all three automakers, they support Biden’s target and announced their ‘shared aspiration’ that 40-50% of their cars sold by 20-30 will be electric vehicles.

During the announcement, President Biden said the future of car manufacturing ‘is electric and there’s no turning back.’ Also during his remarks he emphasized that all electric vehicles and their batteries powering them should be made in the U.S. and with Union Workers. The Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation also announced they are reversing a Trump-era of fuel emissions standards. The new proposal from the agencies for light duty vehicles will be 10% more than the Trump-era rules for 2023 model year vehicles and become 5% more stringent each year through 2026.
