CDC Announces Limited, Targeted Eviction Moratorium

The CDC issued a pause on certain evictions yesterday saying that evicting people could be detrimental to public health and would interfere with efforts to slow the pandemic. The new moratorium comes after the Biden administration let the previous one expire. The new ban applies to areas of the country with high or substantial transmission of the Coronavirus and will last until October 3rd. According to the announcement “In the context of a pandemic, eviction moratoria — like quarantine, isolation, and social distancing — can be an effective public health measure utilized to prevent the spread of communicable disease.”

The new moratorium comes after several democratic lawmakers accused President Biden of saddling them with passing an extension to the former moratorium at the eleventh hour and Biden’s aids said everyone should have known that moratorium was expiring and that congressional action was needed. A source familiar with the effort said the announcement will cover 80% of U.S. counties and 90% of the population.
