August’s “Read Carolina” Book Club Picks!

For the month of August our producer is highlighting the bittersweet feelings that come along with the end of summer, as well as romance awareness month...but with a twist!

The Read Carolina pick for August goes to “The Very Nice Box” by Laura Blackett and Eve Gleichman. Ava designs storage boxes for STÄDA, which is an up and coming furniture company. She’s serious and obsessive, throwing herself into her work in order to forget about a tragedy that killed her fiancée and parents years ago. But when Ava gets a new boss named Mat, she can’t help but be inexplicably and instantly drawn into his magnetic personality. And as she falls in love with him, she starts to heal from her trauma. It’s a really cute, funny and kind of cheesy romantic comedy…but slowly you start to realize this isn’t a comedy at all. It’s a thriller. Set in a unique, fun and exciting workplace environment, everything from Ava’s character arc, to the slow unraveling of the real story, were all very well developed and executed.

The honorary mention this month is dedicated to “Last Summer at the Golden Hotel” by Elyssa Friedland. For decades, the Goldman and Weingold families have co-owned the Golden Hotel. And what was once a thriving vacation spot, is now on the verge of bankruptcy. The relationship between the two families has also deteriorated after one ill-fated summer night, years ago, but an enticing bid on the property forces them to come together one more time to decide if they should keep it or sell. It’s a bittersweet ode to the old charm of the Catskills with a heartwarming ending. It’s also full of long-buried secrets, drama, scandals, romance, nostalgia, and generational clashes that’s fun people of all ages to enjoy.
