Freeze on Evictions Expired Over the Weekend

Freeze on most evictions enacted last year expired over the weekend.

A federal freeze on most evictions enacted last year expired over the weekend. The moratorium was put in place by the CDC last fall in order to keep millions of tenants across the country in their homes after many lost jobs and were unable to pay rent. President Biden extended the freeze for an extra month, but, even with the extension, millions of people in the U.S. are facing eviction. The moratorium protected tenants from eviction for nonpayment, but does not erase back rent owed. Last week, some White House officials made a push to re-examine the legal potential for President Biden to extend the moratorium again. But, they were told by administration lawyers it wasn’t possible. Some states like California, New York and New Jersey, along with some cities, have enacted their own temporary eviction bans that last longer.
