Judge Rules Victims, Families of Surfside Collapse Will Receive $150 Million in Compensation
An update on the condo collapse in Surfside Florida. During a hearing yesterday, a judge ruled that survivors and families of those deceased in the collapse will not be asked to donate their property. Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court Judge Michael Hanzman said “these victims who have lost their homes, their personal belongings, and in many cases their lives are not going to be sacrificing the value of their real estate for the public good.”
There’s been talk recently of turning the site into a public memorial but the judge went on to say that the court’s only task is to compensate the victims of the tragedy. He went on to declare that the victims and families who suffered losses will receive a minimum of $150 million in compensation initially. That includes $50 million in insurance for the building, and at least $100 million in proceeds from the sale of the property where the structure once stood. So far, 97 bodies have been recovered and all have been identified. Authorities will continue their search until all remains are found.
