Nationals Halt Game After Shooting Near Stadium
Three people were injured during a shooting Saturday night outside of Nationals Park in Washington D.C. According to Executive Assistant Chief of Police for DC’s Metropolitan Police Department, Ashan Benedict, a fan outside of the stadium was one of three people wounded. The fan who was shot is expected to recover. Two other people wounded in the shooting were associated with a vehicle that was recovered from the scene and are now in the hospital being questioned by police. It is unknown what their exact involvement was in the shooting but Benedict said they were known to law enforcement.
Multiple loud bangs were heard during the bottom of the 6th inning in the game between the Nationals and the San Diego Padres. After hearing the gunfire, fans fled their seats and sought shelter. According to Benedict there was no threat to people inside of the stadium at any time. Benedict said two vehicles were involved in a ‘shootout’ on a street outside of the stadium during the game and police recovered one of the vehicles, the other, a gray Toyota Corolla with a temporary Virginia license plate remains at-large.
