Search Restarts in Florida As 143 Still Unaccounted For

Rescuers have restarted efforts to locate those unaccounted for from the Florida condo building that collapsed last week in Surfside. So far, 20 people have been pronounced dead and 143 are unaccounted for. Work was halted yesterday as engineers inspected the structure and access to the area was restricted due to safety concerns. Officials have determined that it could be weeks before the rest of the building is demolished but the demolition could be ‘sooner that anticipated’. State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said “to finish the mission, the building will have to go, it’s just too much of a risk.” The area could face heavy rains on Sunday night into Monday morning from Hurricane Elsa. President Bbiden and First Lady Jill met with search and rescue personnel, first responders and some of the families of the 145 people still unaccounted for yesterday. The meeting lasted 3 hours and afterwards, Biden said “What amazed me with this group of people was the resilience, the absolute commitment, their willingness to do whatever it took.” and added “I walked away impressed by their strength.”
