First Rioter Receives Sentence, Judge Calls Insurrection a ‘Disgrace’
A woman from Indiana became the first Capitol rioter to receive her sentence yesterday. At a hearing in D.C. Federal Court, Judge Royce Lamberth said the insurrection was a ‘disgrace’ and forcefully rebuked the ‘utter nonsense’ coming from some Republican lawmakers. He also praised the media for it’s coverage of the assault and pointed out that “Much of the public remains outraged at what occurred.” 49 year old Anna Morgan-Lloyd got six months of probation for trespassing and a $500 fine.
Lamberth noted Morgan-Lloyd avoided jail time because she was not violent and only spent 10 minutes inside the building. She also immediately cooperated with investigators and expressed regret for participating in the insurrection. Lamberth said her sentence does not set a precedent and that he will likely send others to prison. Currently, there are over 500 defendants from 43 states involved in the Capitol Riot investigation which is one of the largest the Department of Justice has ever conducted. Prosecutors are negotiating behind the scenes and have secured 7 guilty plea deals so far.
