Senate to Vote on Voting Rights Expansion, Georgia Removing Names From Voters Registration
Republicans in the Senate are justifying their plans to block the vote on voting rights legislation. The Senate is set to vote soon on whether to advance the For the People Act’, an elections overhaul that would do several things including make election day a public holiday, expand early voting and ban partisan gerrymandering. Although most Republicans are against the bill, Democrats are remaining hopeful that the two parties can reach some sort of compromise. Democrats believe the bill would counteract efforts by republican-led state legislatures to restrict voting rights.
Also in terms of voting. Last week, Georgia’s Secretary of State announced they will be purging more than 100,000 names from it’s voter registration rolls in an attempt to keep the state’s voter files ‘up to date’. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said “making sure Georgia’s voter rolls are up to date is key to ensuring the integrity of our elections, there is no legitimate reason to keep ineligible voters on the rolls.” According to a statement, voter files being removed are ‘obsolete and outdated’.
