Airlines, Banks, Stock Exchanges and Trading Platforms Suffered Internet Outages This Morning
Airlines, banks, stock exchanges and trading platforms suffered a short outage this morning after a key piece of internet infrastructure failed. Virgin Australia said in a statement that it had resolved an IT outage caused by a failure at Akamai Technologies, a global content delivery network. Outages included Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Bank and the Australian and New Zealand Banking Group. A Las Angeles International Airport spokesperson said they were experiencing slight disruptions with their Southwest and United Airlines flights but said there were no significant delays or cancellations. The Hong Kong stock exchange website was also offline briefly. These outages come 10 days after countless websites and apps around the world ran by ‘Fastly’ went down for about an hour earlier this month.
