Biden Administration Investigating How Tax Information from World’s Richest People Was Leaked

The Biden administration announced yesterday that it will be investigating how tax information from several of the world’s richest people was leaked to the public. According to Treasury spokeswoman Lily Adams “the unauthorized disclosure of confidential government information is illegal, and the matter is being referred to the Office of the Inspector General, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, all of whom have independent authority to investigate.”

Yesterday, ProPublica reported on exclusively obtained IRS documents which showed billionaires including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Bloomberg, Warren Buffett and more have legally avoided paying income taxes. During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said “any unauthorized disclosure of confidential government information by a person of access is illegal and we take this very seriously”. She reiterated the Biden administration’s stance on having wealthy Americans pay more taxes to fund the Presidents proposals.
