Coastal Carolina University launched a new research program that’s focused on flooding. The Smart River Research Program at Osprey Marina in Socastee is funded by the Duke Energy Foundation through a private-public partnership. New technology in the Intracoastal Waterway will work to collect data about flooding events and officials say the program will help localize that data. Sensors will be placed in the water to gather information on depth, roughness and quality. They can predict flooding events and track daily trends, while also preventing future homeowners from buying houses in flood prone areas.
