Today is the Deadline to File State, Federal Income Taxes

Today is the deadline to file your 2020 federal and state tax returns. A few months ago, it was pushed back from the original deadline of April 15 to today due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The IRS gave filers, tax preparers and the IRS itself the extra time to sort through the changes which are affecting almost everyone’s returns this year. With the filing season starting a few weeks later this year which gave the IRS time to administer stimulus checks and other Covid-19 relief.

If you do miss today’s deadline, you could be eligible for penalty relief if you fall under two exceptions. The first is anyone who pays estimated taxes which includes small businesses but, your usual payment was still due on April 15th. The second is anyone who was living in Texas, Oklahoma or Louisiana and had been hit by the bad storms in February, the IRS extended their deadlines to June 15th. You can also request a 6 month extension online which means your taxes won’t be due until October 15th. Refunds usually take 21 days to process after the IRS receives your return.
