Medina Spirit Allowed to Race in Preakness Stakes on Saturday
2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit will be allowed to race in this weekend’s Preakness Stakes on Saturday. He will start from the third position at the track. After the Kentucky Derby, the colt failed a post race drug test for betamethasone in it’s system. Yesterday, trainer Bob Baffert said in a statement that the horse had been treated before the derby with an ointment containing the steroid. Baffert has been banned from entering any of his horses in races at Churchill Downs.
7 horses have won the Preakness after being trained by Baffert but he is not expected to be at the race this weekend, instead assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes will be looking after Medina Spirit. The results of the pre-race test samples will be announced Friday. Medina Spirit has a betting favorite at 9-5. The second place winner of the Kentucky Derby Mandaloun, will not be racing this weekend.
