The Department of Justice is seeking the indictment of Derek Chauvin and three other ex-Minneapolis police officers involved with the death of George Floyd.
It’s been reported federal prosecutors are moving forward with plans to charge ex-police officers Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Keung and Tou Thao with federal civil rights violations. Prosecutors also intend to charge Chauvin in connection to the violent arrest of a 14 year old boy in 2017. According to court documents by state prosecutors, in that case, Chauvin and another officer were responding to a domestic assault call and while trying to arrest the boy, Chauvin hit the teen with a flashlight before applying a neck restraint with his knee until he lost consciousness. The documents state “the child began repeatedly telling the officers that he could not breathe, and his mother told Chauvin to take his knee off her son.” The DOJ and attorneys for the ex-officers declined to comment. Chauvin is scheduled to be sentenced in the death of Floyd in June and Lane, Kueng and Thao will face a judge together in August.
