Senator Tim Scott To Deliver Republican Response Following Biden’s Address To Congress

After President Biden’s first address to Congress tonight, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott will deliver the republican response.  Scott was appointed to the Senate by former Governor Nikki Haley in 2013 when former Senator Jim DeMint stepped down to run the heritage foundation. He is the first African American Senator to represent a Southern state since the Reconstruction era following the Civil War and is the only African American Republican in the Senate currently. He won a special election in 2014 to secure his Senate seat and was re-elected in 2016. He runs for election in 2022.

He has spent his Senate years highlighting racial tensions with police and in 2015 proposed legislation to create a national database of police use-of-force incidents that resulted in death. Last year, after the death of George Floyd he drafted legislation aimed at overhauling policing which received a 55 to 45 vote and failed on the Senate floor without the 60 votes needed to pass.
