President Biden Set To Announce ‘American Families Plan’ During Address To Congress

President Biden is set to announce a $1.8 trillion investment in education, child care and paid family leave during his address to Congress tonight. The package called the ‘American Families Plan’ is the second part of his effort to strengthen the nation. It would also extend and make permanent enhancements to several tax credits that were included in the $1.9 trillion rescue bill that Biden signed into law. The President plans to finance the package by hiking up taxes for the rich and says he wants to reward work not wealth.

The proposal calls for having low and middle income families pay no more than 7% of their income on child care for kids younger than 5 and bring childcare workers wages up to $15 an hour. He is also proposing a $109 billion plan to make two years of community college free with the federal government covering 75% and states covering the rest, and create a $39 billion program that provides two years of subsidized tuition for students and families earning less than $125,000. It will also provide $1,400 in additional assistance to low-income students by increasing the Pell Grant award.
