The End Of An Era: His Royal Highness Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Died
His Royal Highness Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh died at the age of 99 this morning. He was born on June 10th 1921 in Corfu and was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. At age 7 he moved to England and lived at Kensington Palace with his grandmother Victoria Mountbatten. At 18 he joined the Royal Navy and graduated from The Britannia Royal Naval College as a top cadet. He met his cousin Elizabeth in 1934 at a family wedding and they exchanged letters while he was overseas during the war.
They married in Westminster Abbey on November 20th, 1947 with 2000 guests in attendance and millions listening to the ceremony on the radio. In 1952 at the age of 25, Queen Elizabeth II took the throne with Philip by her side. He spent 65 years supporting the queen and retired from his public role in 2017. He was the longest serving consort of any British monarch. He spent February 17th through March 16th in the hospital and was released just three weeks ago.
