Governor McMaster was served with a lawsuit yesterday for ordering state employees to return to in-person work. It was filed by a College of Charleston employee and the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina. The lawsuit claims discrimination against women for forcing a choice between childcare and work. The suit also claims the order put families at risk of covid-19 exposure. The plaintiffs believe the Governor didn’t have the power to issue an order to return to in-person work. The Governor’s office believes South Carolinians have been returning to work in person throughout last year and have been able to do it safely and that employees were given weeks to make plans for contingencies including childcare.
