Deadly Train Crash In Taiwan
50 people were killed and dozens were injured when a train derailed in Taiwan. The incident occurred near the Toroko Gorge causing dozens of passengers to crawl out of windows to safety. There were 490 passengers on board and many of them were traveling to a four day Tomb Sweeping Festival in Taitung. A truck fell off of a cliff and landed directly in front of a tunnel which then caused the train to smash into the truck after exiting the tunnel.
During a press conference, a government official said at least 156 people were injured in the crash and were rescued by emergency personal. The local fire department said the train driver was among the dead and at least 69 survivors are being treated in several different hospitals. Authorities are still working to identify the victims. The government has already laid out a compensation plan for every passenger with $185,000 being provided to the families of each fatality. Those badly injured will receive $91,000 and other injured passengers will receive $14,000.
