San Diego Teachers Volunteering To Help Teach Migrant Children At Convention Center
San Diego teachers have been instructing migrant girls housed at the San Diego Convention Center in-person. A spokeswoman for the San Diego Unified School District said the teachers gave up their vacation time to volunteer at the convention center. Saying “our teachers have volunteered to help, we are not paying them in any way because caring for children is central to who they are as human beings.” The school district is the second-largest in the state and the largest in San Diego County with plans to reopen on a hybrid schedule on April 12th.
Hundreds of migrants have been housed at the convention center while the Biden Administration has been trying to figure out how to handle the crisis of unaccompanied children at the border. Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said of more than 700 unaccompanied girls at the facility, at least 82 have tested positive for Coronavirus. They were moved to a different location and separated from the negative group.
